I received an email earlier this evening from FFTF, where they said the following:
The traffic is going to be huge, so we need to make sure we can meet demand when the spotlight is on. Our server bill this week will be ridiculous, on top of the free or donated services we use.
Now, it's possible that FFTF is paying for an adjustable plan, where bandwidth is increased to accommodate extra traffic - but that really shouldn't cause their "server bill" (seriously, who calls it that? Only someone who has no idea what they're talking about and expects their audience to be similarly ignorant) to be "ridiculous". If it was going to be ridiculous, why didn't you pay for a more reasonable hosting plan?
Therefore, while I agree with the importance of the message of the Battle for the Net, I urge my readers to resist the immoral fundraising efforts of Fight for the Future. If they actually stood for something, then they wouldn't need to resort to underhanded tricks like this.
